There Are Still” – Gabrielle Grace Graber

“There Are Still” by Gabrielle Grace Graber was displayed in Harder Hall on the Alfred University campus on May 1st. This was an installation of life size clay people. Each person had a different expression and pose. There was also cloth hanging from the ceiling with dark painted spots that appeared to represent people or shadows of people.

The idea behind this piece is a bit hard to find. It appears that each statue is afraid of what they can see on the pieces of cloth hanging down. The ghost like abstract paintings of people. Some of the statues were cowering with fear, others ripping their eyes out or standing still like nothing is happening. Each person is uniquely different with their build, the amount of detail, their faces and their genders. These pieces all appear to be related and seem as if they should be viewed as a whole, instead of individual pieces.

From an art standpoint what stood out to me relating to motion graphics and GMD, is that separately, these pieces don’t make much sense. But, as you step back and begin to look at the whole picture you begin to start to put things together in your head and make your own story out of it. I think it is important in our works to allow some room for the viewer to create their own story for what is happening. Not every piece needs to be a straight forward piece with a very distinct meaning.

I also think this piece is a good representation of designing things as a whole as well as individually. You might not understand why individual pieces are doing what they are doing, but standing alone you can still tell what they are doing. For example, the cowering man. Alone, you understand that he is cowering. So it can stand as a piece alone, but the design also allows it to be displayed as part of the whole where he is staring at the dark ghostly shadow which begins to give context. So, the most important and relevant thing I got from this piece is to make sure your designs can stand alone, but work in the entirety of the piece as well.
