To accurately draw bones, a person must spend hours studying the bones and taking note of every minor detail they contain. To show the proper depth, proportions, and to make the bones appear realistic it is very important to take notice of every little crevice and change in lighting across the entire bone. With the ability to recognize value shifts on the bones, you will allow your drawing to jump off the page. In my bone study I wanted to accurately portray the bones I chose, but also wanted to give it life.
To begin my bone study I started with even weight lines so that I could focus on my proportions and get the accurate shape of the bones. After getting the initial lines down, I went back through and added in value shifts to give each bone a different depth on the page. I was able to use the placement of each bone to create movement throughout my entire piece. The viewer’s eye will start at the top of the page with the hand facing downward. The eye will then travel to the bones that form a puddle of water. After noticing these bones, the viewer will be led to the water, which contains the pelvic bone.
One issue I began to have with my composition was that everything was becoming flat and seemed to all just run together. The way I choose to fix this was to add more contrast. By increasing the contrast between each bone, the water, the reflections in the bones and water, and the white background I was able to create depth and really begin to bring the drawing to life.
I believe that I was able to successfully represent what human bones look like. This was a very helpful project with learning the importance of shading and how minor details can change the entire look of your drawings. Not only does this help with mechanics of drawing, but also it helps to understand the human body more than before. If we understand the human body more, we can more accurately draw people with proper proportions and shapes.
